A bit about your hosts Joanna Green and Art Godin, in case you're curious...
As Newly Retired People, Art and I consider ourselves "in recovery" from our demanding careers! I worked in the field of sustainable agriculture and community food systems at Cornell University for 25 years before founding the non-profit Groundswell Center for Local Food & Farming here in Ithaca. Art was the first General Manager of our local food co-op, GreenStar Cooperative Market, human resources manager with local clothing company Angelheart Designs, and business manager for local green-building firm Taitem Engineering - "Technology As If The Earth Mattered."
We know how important it is to take a break and get away from it all whenever you can!
Building Owl Moon Cottage was our first major post-retirement project together. We wanted a way to continue to make interesting new friends from around the world, while staying at home on our small homestead farm, working in the garden, tending the goats, and hiking the nearby trails.
We've been married since 1981, and raised three awesome children right here in the Ithaca area. At one point we moved to Maui with our two teenagers, and lived in a banana grove for a couple years. It was a hard decision to come back to upstate New York, but we've done our best to recreate our rural Hawaiian lifestyle here in the Finger Lakes. We are also both musicians, and are finally able to devote more time to our music now that we're retired.
We grow almost all our own vegetables, and spend an inordinate amount of time in the kitchen or at the grill, cooking and enjoying great meals. Just this year we sold off our milking goats so that we can get away more easily to visit family. We still enjoy the company of our highly enthusiastic and energetic doggie Uila ("Lightning" in Hawaiian) and the abundant wildlife all around us.
We feel incredibly fortunate to be living in this very special place on the planet. We hope our guests can take inspiration from the natural beauty, tranquility and magic of Owl Moon Cottage.
